Rocco: A Belgian Malinois Who Feels Every Emotion Deeply

Some dogs come into your life quietly, and then change it completely. Rocco, my Belgian Malinois, is one such soul.

At 4 years and 5 months old, Rocco is not just a dog—he is deeply intuitive, sensitive, and emotionally connected. He can instantly sense even the slightest change in my mood or tone of voice. Living with him has made me more aware of my own emotions, because I know he feels them just as strongly.

I took Rocco in when he was 1 year and 8 months old. I had known him earlier, the way we casually know a friend’s dog. But when his first owner left India, Rocco was placed in temporary care where he wasn’t treated well. I couldn’t ignore it—I chose to bring him home, no matter what.

Growing up in Russia, my family always had pets. But Rocco taught me something deeper: the true meaning of responsibility. With him, it’s not just about feeding or walking—it’s about understanding, patience, and commitment.

Rocco was originally meant for more structured work, but due to cryptorchidism, he was not selected for army training. Perhaps that shaped his personality—he is incredibly kind and gentle with people. However, his interactions with other dogs are different. Street dogs in India have often been aggressive toward him, and as a result, he remains cautious and unsure around unfamiliar dogs.

Like many Malinois, Rocco has his obsessions. His absolute favorite is playing frisbee—he can go on endlessly. He also loves chasing cows and barking at them, which perhaps reflects the breed’s strong herding instincts.

Over the past year, I’ve focused more on training him, and his intelligence is remarkable. He learns commands quickly and thrives when given structure and purpose. This is a breed that needs both mental and physical stimulation every single day.

My advice to anyone considering a Belgian Malinois: start training early. Without proper guidance, their energy and intensity can become difficult to manage. But when nurtured right, they are exceptional working dogs—highly suited for roles like police and service work.

More importantly, they can become something even greater—a loyal, understanding companion.

Rocco is not just my dog. He is my friend, my shadow, and my constant emotional mirror.
