Global giant Unicharm enters India to transform premium pet hygiene and care standards nationwide

Japanese consumer goods major Unicharm Corporation has officially entered the Indian pet care market, marking a significant milestone in the country's rapidly expanding companion animal industry. Beginning operations in July 2026, the Tokyo-headquartered company aims to introduce a range of premium pet hygiene and care solutions tailored to the evolving needs of Indian pet parents. The move forms part of Unicharm's long-term global strategy to strengthen its presence in high-growth emerging markets while promoting its vision of a society where people and pets live comfortably together.

Founded in 1961, Unicharm is one of Asia's leading consumer goods companies, best known for brands such as MamyPoko, Sofy and Lifree. The company entered the pet care business in 1986 and has since built a strong portfolio across Japan, Southeast Asia and North America. Its pet division offers products including Grand Deli premium pet food, DeoSheet pet toilet pads, DeoToilet litter systems, DeoSand cat litter, disposable pet diapers, training pads, deodorising products and other hygiene solutions designed to improve the quality of life for both pets and their owners.

How Unicharm will sell in India

Unicharm is leveraging its existing Indian hygiene and diaper distribution network to roll out pet care:

  • Channels: Malls, supermarkets, and small independently owned retail shops across urban areas

Rollout plan: Start in urban centres, then expand nationwide by 2028.

  • Local entity: Operations are being run through Unicharm India Private Limited, which already handles its baby-care and adult-care

This strategy mirrors how Unicharm recently expanded into Brazil (via acquisition of Nutrire in May 2026) and now India, to accelerate global growth in emerging

India's rising pet ownership, growing demand for premium products and increasing awareness of pet health and hygiene make the country an attractive destination for global pet care brands. By leveraging decades of consumer research, product innovation and manufacturing expertise, Unicharm plans to deliver value-added solutions specifically adapted for Indian households. Industry observers believe the company's arrival will intensify competition in the premium pet hygiene segment while accelerating innovation and raising quality standards across the market.
